ERCP Or Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography

An ERCP or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is a special endoscopy designed to take pictures of the pancreas, gallbladder, and related structures. It has the advantage of looking up stream so it can see where digestive fluids from these organs originate.

The test can also be used to place stents in the bile duct of the pancreas, remove gallstones stuck in the bile duct, or perform a sphincterotomy make a small incision in the bile or pancreatic duct to drain fluids.

WHY DO AN ERCP?

Your doctor may order an ERCP if you have:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight loss
  • Jaundice
  • An ultrasound or CT scan that shows stones or a mass in the in the pancreas or gallbladder

The test verifies the need for surgery and gives your doctor Insight regarding the best type of surgical procedure. An ERCP is sometimes used to remove bile duct stones.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING TESTING

During the test, doctor Dr. Asgeri will numb your throat and give you IV medication to help you relax. After the procedure, which may last about an hour, he will send any tissue biopsy to the lab. Once you wake up, he will share the results of your tests with you.
