An upper endoscopy or EGD uses a thin lighted scope with a video camera at its tip to examine the upper digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, the stomach, in the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.
WHY HAVE AN UPPER ENDOSCOPY
An EGD is called for if you have:
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Bleeding
- Swallowing problems
The procedure is more accurate than x-ray for examining the inside of the upper digestive system and for detecting abnormal growths. During the procedure, abnormalities can often be treated. For example:
- Bleeding from ulcers or cancer can be treated
- Polyps in the stomach can be removed and tissue samples sent for lab analysis
- Areas in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum can be dilated or stretched using balloons or a stent can be inserted
- Objects stuck in the esophagus is stomach can be removed
- Ulcers, tumors, and information can be identified
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH AN UPPER ENDOSCOPY
During an upper endoscopy, you will be given a local anesthetic at the back of your throat along with an IV with a sedative and a pain reliever to help you relax. Doctor Asgeri at Oasis Advanced Gastroenterology will insert the tube into your mouth and gently push it down your esophagus into your stomach. During this time, the camera does its work of identifying problem areas in your intestinal tract.
After your doctor completes the procedure, he will send any material that was biopsied to the results of the test with you discuss whether any other action is needed.
