Peptic Ulcer

Peptic ulcers can develop on the inside lining of your stomach or on the upper portion of your intestine. Those in the stomach are called gastric ulcers, while those on the inside of your small intestine {duodenum) are called duodenal ulcers. Both are characterized by open sores that are aggravated but not caused by smoking, drinking alcohol, untreated stress, and spicy foods.

Common causes of peptic ulcers include bacteria and regular use of anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, ketoprofen) and/or other medications.

SYMPTOMS OF PEPTIC ULCERS

75% of people with peptic ulcers have no symptoms.

Common indicators of peptic ulcers include:

  • Burning stomach pain
  • Intolerance to fatty foods
  • Feeling of fullness, bloating, or belching
  • Nausea

Less commonly, symptoms of peptic ulcers include:

  • Vomiting or vomiting blood
  • Trouble breathing
  • Faintness, nausea, or vomiting
  • Unexplained weight loss

Stomach acid makes pain worse, so eating certain foods can offset stomach acid while taking an acid-reducing medication can offer temporary relief. Pain is worse at night and in between meals.

DISCUSS YOUR TREATMENT OPTIONS WITH DR. ASGERI

If you experience pain you think might be an ulcer, make an appointment with Dr Asgeri at Oasis Advance Gastroenterology. He may order an upper gastrointestinal series of x-rays, an endoscopy, or a lab test for H. pylori, a bacterium that inflames the stomach lining.

Treatment most often involves antibiotics to kill H. pylori, medications to block or reduce acid production or protect the lining of your stomach and small intestine, or antacids. Most patients find these measures effective, although surgery remains an option for tough cases, such as acute bleeding or a perforation.
