At Oasis Advanced Gastroenterology, we provide colon cancer screening programs designed to detect early signs of colorectal cancer and polyps to prevent its development. Colorectal cancer is preventable when detected early, yet it often develops without obvious symptoms. Dr. Mehrdad Asgeri, a board-certified gastroenterologist in Coachella, offers expert screening to patients across Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, La Quinta, and the greater Coachella Valley.
Colon cancer often begins as small, noncancerous growths called polyps. Over time, some polyps can become cancerous. With regular colon cancer screening, these growths can be identified and removed before they cause harm.
Early detection allows for:
You may need colon cancer screening if you:
If you are unsure whether you meet screening criteria, our team will review your medical history and risk factors to determine the right screening schedule.
While several screening methods exist, colonoscopy remains the gold standard for colorectal cancer prevention and detection.
A colonoscopy allows Dr. Asgeri to visually examine the lining of your colon and rectum using a flexible scope with a camera. During the procedure, any detected polyps would be removed, and suspicious areas would be biopsied for pathologic analysis.
Why it’s preferred:
In some cases, a flexible sigmoidoscopy may be recommended. This procedure examines only the lower part of the colon and rectum. While it can detect issues in that area, it does not evaluate the entire colon, so it is generally used for specific cases or follow-up care.
We also offer stool-based testing, such as fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) or stool DNA tests. These are less invasive but must be repeated more often and cannot remove polyps. If results are abnormal, a colonoscopy will still be necessary.
You will be given clear instructions to prepare your bowel, usually involving dietary changes and a bowel cleansing solution, the day before the procedure.
The colonoscopy is performed under sedation, so you will be comfortable throughout. The scope is gently guided through the colon to allow full inspection.
You may feel mild bloating or cramping for a short time. Most patients resume normal activities the following day.
Colon cancer screening is not a one-time event. Depending on your results and risk factors, you may need to repeat screenings every 1 to 10 years. Patients with no risk factors and clear results may only need screening every 10 years, while those at higher risk may require more frequent evaluations.
We work with you to create a long-term screening schedule that fits your health needs and lifestyle.
Colon cancer screening saves lives. If you have not yet had your first screening or are due for a follow-up, now is the time to schedule your appointment. Dr. Mehrdad Asgeri provides trusted, comprehensive care for patients across Coachella Valley digestive health communities.
Colon cancer screening is essential for colorectal cancer prevention. One out of four individuals aged over 45 will develop colon polyps. Many cases of colon cancer begin as small polyps that can be removed before they become cancerous. Early detection through screening can prevent cancer from developing and significantly improve treatment outcomes if cancer is found.
Most adults should begin bowel cancer screening at age 45. However, if you have risk factors such as a family history of colorectal cancer, personal history of colon polyps, or inflammatory bowel disease, your gastroenterologist in Coachella may recommend starting earlier.
A colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for digestive cancer prevention. It is done under sedation and is painless. It allows direct visualization of the colon and rectum and enables polyps removal during the same procedure, which other screening methods cannot do.
If your colonoscopy results are normal and you have no risk factors, screening is usually repeated every 10 years. If polyps are found or you have higher risk factors, your GI doctor will recommend a shorter interval, often between 1 and 5 years.
If polyps are detected during your colonoscopy, Dr. Mehrdad Asgeri will remove them immediately. This process is painless, as you will be under sedation. Colonoscopy plays a critical role in colorectal cancer prevention, or the need for a bag (colostomy bag).
Most insurance plans cover colon cancer screening as a preventive service. Our office staff can confirm your coverage and help with pre-authorization if needed.
